Rehabilitation and Service life Extension of the Dome Structures Supporting the ER101 Road Platform
Santa Cruz, Madeira, Portugal
The structure was designed by EDGAR CARDOSO in 1979 to contain the runway topside at Madeira Airport and support the VR1 road platform. It is a reinforced concrete earth
support structure composed of 10 inclined domes supported by 11 vertical counterforts spaced 25 m apart. Due to the high chloride contamination levels of the concrete, the structure presented
general delamination issues. The detailed design for its rehabilitation and extension of service life was based on the principles and repair methods contemplated in NP EN 1504, namely the
structural concrete and rebar rehabilitation, and the implementation of an impressed current Cathodic Protection system on the RC domes.
